Week Commencing 19th July
This week in school we are finishing off the 'Flashback' unit of work. During your isolation lesson, you should:
Write a script for a piece of drama containing a flashback. This can be based on anything you wish, but in school we are doing a piece of drama about a car crash. There will need to be a scene after the crash, then a flashback to before and during the crash and finally going back to the present again.
Once this is complete, please email it to your teacher.

This half term we are studying the Elements of DRAMA. This is a unit of work which investigates the building blocks of Drama and Theatre and which also develops group work skills and the ability to address an audience.

Task: think about the work we have been doing in school about your first day at St Bede's. We have now created two scenes (getting up in the morning and the journey to school). This week students should research the musical elements of Pitch as well as revising all of the other musical elements that we have learnt so far (see further down).
Pitch is the term we use to describe high and low sounds in Music. To illustrate this, have a listen firstly to Mozart's Flute Concerto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ExqsbrOPN4. The Flute is an example of a high pitched instrument. Now compare this to John Williams' Tuba Concerto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyiDwtve-LY. The Tuba is an example of a low pitched instrument - you should be able to hear the differences.
Task: research other instruments of the orchestra (for example, violin, trumpet, double bass, bassoon) and listen to see if you can decide which instruments are high pitched and which instruments are low pitched.

For example, if the nuts are removed from a Snickers bar, it essentially becomes a Mars bar. In the same way, in music, if a layer of sound is removed or added, the piece may sound totally different. Listen to this Fugue by J.S. Bach to see how layers of sound can be added one by one to move from a thin to a thick texture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbox4oi6HjA.
Timbre: this is the unique sound of an instrument or voice. Imagine that your mum or your best friend calls you but has withheld their caller ID. How do you know it is that person, just by them saying 'hi, it's me...'. It is the unique sound of their voice. The same is true for musical instruments - if you strum a guitar, it makes a very different sound to that of a piano, and it would be easy to identify.
