YEAR 7 FOOD – Hygiene and Safety:
1. The most liked temperature for bacteria is 37 degrees, which is our body temperature. This means that people, us, are the largest problem in the kitchen, as our hands, hair and breath can all infect food. For instance, not everyone washes their hands after using the toilet, so touching food meant for others to eat causes public health issues. Can you find out some common causes of food poisoning?
2. Think about all the equipment in the kitchen, how clean is it? Knives and chopping boards used to cut meat shouldn't be used for other kinds of foods without being washed first. Find out why.
3 There are hazards too, such as sharp knives, which is why we use the bridge and claw techniques. What are they?
4. We know that water and electricity is a fatal combination, so what can we do to keep ourselves safe when using food mixers in the kitchen?

YEAR 7 FOOD
Yr 7 There are the three kinds of heat transfer commonly found in the kitchen, but two work in combination Find out the meaning of conduction, convection and radiation.
To make it easier, if you think about making flapjack, you would have to be careful not to burn your hand on the pan, which is being heated on the hob. You add ingredients to the pan, including sugar, golden syrup and margarine, and as the liquid heats through, the margarine melts. Those are examples. The third involves putting some pizza in the microwave. Which kind of heat transfer matches the three examples?
Can you think of other examples of conduction, convection or radiation?
Whether you're using a pan on a stove, a convection oven, or a heavy-duty microwave, conduction, convection, and radiation are all around us. Knowing and understanding what heat transfer is, how it works, and which type of heat transfer is happening as you cook can help you better understand the science of cooking and improve your skills as a chef.

Sometimes what people eat is governed by religious rules, or by specific issues in the body, for instance disease, or intolerance. We use the word diet in two senses, the first to describe what foods someone eats which are normal for them, and also to mean restrictions in what someone is eating in order to lose weight, or to avoid aggravating a disease, or to reduce symptoms, or to avoid death etc.
For this week's work, take three main religions from the list, and find out how the diet of many people can be affected by following a religion.
Christianity: 2.1 billion.
Islam: 1.3 billion.
Hinduism: 900 million.
Buddhism: 376 million.
Sikhism: 23 million.
Judaism: 14 million

YEAR 7 FOOD
Yr 7 Last week we looked at macronutrients and said that the three basic blocks that make up our diet are proteins, fats and carbohydrates, but these aren't the only things that we need to remain healthy. The other things we need are found in foods in much smaller amounts, and are called micronutrients, a chemical element or substance needed in tiny quantities, which we commonly know as vitamins and minerals.
Now you also know about plant-based diets as well as diets containing proteins and fats derived from fish and meat. Pick 3 vitamins and find out which foods contain them.
1. Vitamin A,
2. The B group,
3. Vitamin C,
4. Vitamin D,
5. Vitamin E
6. Vitamin K
