2. Think about all the equipment in the kitchen, how clean is it? Knives and chopping boards used to cut meat shouldn't be used for other kinds of foods without being washed first. Find out why.
3 There are hazards too, such as sharp knives, which is why we use the bridge and claw techniques. What are they?
4. We know that water and electricity is a fatal combination, so what can we do to keep ourselves safe when using food mixers in the kitchen?

Imagine you are explaining to a friend, trying to stop him burning himself when using the oven. What would you say are the most important steps using an oven? When you finished in the oven and had the washing up to do, your friend started off by using the cold tap to fill the washing up bowl. Tell him how to wash up properly, what temperature water to use, what order to wash things up in, and the importance of hygiene in washing up.

YEAR 8 FOOD
Yr 8 You are preparing a pasta salad, and the ingredients are cooked pasta, items of salad such as tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, croutons, and a protein such as tuna or chicken. Think about the following questions, and send me your responses.
1. Why should I wash the salad items?
2. Why do I leave the tuna or chicken in the fridge until the last thing?
3 When I chop up the chicken why do I use a different knife and chopping board to the ones I used for the salad?
Just before serving, I add a salad dressing which is a classic vinaigrette.
Thinking about the items in the salad, can you identify the sources of fats, sugars and carbohydrates? Thinking a bit further, where might we find any vitamins or minerals? Do you know which of these is organic, and which inorganic?

YEAR 8 FOOD
Making a batch of fairy cakes/buns involves making a cake batter and adding a filling of your choice, such as jam and cream in a butterfly bun. Jam is a mixture of fruit and sugar, and at home it is easiest to make it in a 50% fruit to 50% sugar mixture. The temperature of the jam mixture has to reach setting point, when the mixture turns from syrup to a more stringy mixture that begins to form a skin on its surface. Other favourites include lemon curd (egg yolks, sugar, lemon juice) and nutella (chocolate and ground hazelnuts). You can also ice buns using icing sugar, a few drops of water, and food colouring, or make butter cream, margarine and icing sugar. In a bakery, baked goods are made in batches. For instance, bread is made first and left to rise, whilst they are waiting, the bakers will make croissants etc, and then finish the bread, before going on to cakes and pastries. Bread requires a hot oven, cakes a moderate oven, and neither will cook well at other temperatures.
1 What are the safety rules for using an oven?
2. Why is it a good idea to limit the amount of sugar you eat?
3 What happens to teeth if someone has a diet high in sugar?
4 What is the common disease related to sugar in the body?
5 What is batch processing in the food industry?

YEAR 8 FOOD
Sometimes what people eat is governed by religious rules, or by specific issues in the body, for instance disease, or intolerance. We use the word diet in two senses, the first to describe what foods someone eats which are normal for them, and also to mean restrictions in what someone is eating in order to lose weight, or to avoid aggravating a disease, or to reduce symptoms, or to avoid death etc.
For this week's work, take three main religions from the list, and find out how the diet of many people can be affected by following a religion.
Christianity: 2.1 billion.
Islam: 1.3 billion.
Hinduism: 900 million.
Buddhism: 376 million.
Sikhism: 23 million.
Judaism: 14 million

YEAR 8 FOOD
Yr 8 Last week we looked at macronutrients and said that the three basic blocks that make up our diet are proteins, fats and carbohydrates, but these aren't the only things that we need to remain healthy. The other things we need are found in foods in much smaller amounts, and are called micronutrients, a chemical element or substance needed in tiny quantities, which we commonly know as vitamins and minerals.
Now you also know about plant-based diets as well as diets containing proteins and fats derived from fish and meat. Pick 3 vitamins and find out which foods contain them.
1. Vitamin A,
2. The B group,
3. Vitamin C,
4. Vitamin D,
5. Vitamin E
6. Vitamin K
